Despite all the success she has achieved, Carey's memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey," revealed a deeper and often tumultuous journey to stardom. In her memoir, she opened up about her past, her love for Christmas, and her enduring commitment to making the holiday season special.

She unraveled her early years, painting a picture of a challenging childhood and her unwavering pursuit of happiness. Now, as a mother of twins, she strives to provide them with the perfect Christmas, a tradition she holds dear, even amidst the challenges of her past.

Mariah Carey's childhood was anything but the picture-perfect holiday season we associate her with today. Born to an African-American father and a white mother, her parents split when she was just three years old. Her early years were marred by neglect and violence, particularly from her older siblings.

In one heart-wrenching revelation, she shared that when she was twelve, her older sister allegedly drugged her and left her in a precarious situation. Such a turbulent upbringing left a profound impact on Carey. She reflected:

"I think my staying up all night started from having such a dysfunctional family. Oftentimes, whoever was in the house was doing whatever it was that they were doing, and that felt kinda unsafe to me, so I started staying up."

Another challenging aspect of Mariah Carey's childhood came from Christmas experiences, which surprisingly made her learn to love the holiday. As she recalled, her Christmases were far from the picture-perfect celebrations people imagine. Still, despite having limited resources, her mother tried her best to make the holiday season special.

Despite her parents' divorce and financial constraints, her mother made an effort to create a festive atmosphere. She would wrap up fruit in newspaper and give it to her daughter, saying it was a gift from the cat. She would sing Christmas carols, make wine, and invite friends. Carey shared:

"I always wanted Christmas to be perfect and looked forward to the holidays, but I had this incredibly dysfunctional family that would ruin it. I was like, 'When I grow up, I am never going to let that happen. I am going to make Christmas perfect every year.'"

True enough, as she had a family of her own, Christmas became a well-loved holiday. Carey created her own Christmas magic within her household, with Santa Claus and his reindeer making annual appearances at her home.

One of her holidays in Aspen, Colorado, even featured a sleigh ride with real reindeer and joyful carol singing, including her iconic "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Carey's commitment to providing her children, twins Moroccan Cannon and Monroe Cannon, with the perfect Christmas has undoubtedly made them enjoy the celebration.

Carey's connection to Christmas doesn't stop with her holiday celebrations with family. Her iconic Christmas song, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," has also become a staple of the season. Her inspiration for the song came from the emotional connection she has with Christmas, not the gifts, but the hopefulness of the holiday season and joyful songs of the 1950s and 1960s.

In creating the song, Carey wanted to capture that spirit and radiate happiness during the holidays. This timeless classic, released 28 years ago in 1994, has become inseparable from the holiday season, and often, is the first song that comes to mind when people think of Christmas music.

While Carey's Christmas song is undoubtedly iconic, she doesn't play favorites when it comes to her own creations. She loves all Christmas songs and cherishes the process of making music that brings joy to people.

In addition to her musical contribution to Christmas, Carey also authored a children's book titled "The Christmas Princess." The story is about a young girl named Little Mariah, a mixed-race girl with limited means, who, like the author herself, faces challenges and learns to rise above them through music and self-expression.

The book is a heartwarming tale that emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself. In her own words, Carey stated, "Prince Charming doesn't save her. Music saves her. Music always saves the day, okay?" She explained that the book is for those who have felt like they don't quite fit in, no matter their race, creed, or color.
