School bus full of kids involved in a 'horrific' crash in New Jersey

A teacher and one child have been reported dead after their school bus collided with a dump truck in New Jersey. It’s been reported that all passengers of the incident were injured.

ABC News reported that the Morris County Prosecutor's Office was currently investigating the fatal incident that occurred on May 17, 2018. The school bus was said to be from East Brook Middle School.

The school bus that had an accident with a dump truck was said to be carrying fifth-grade students and teachers. In a joint statement, police Acting Superintendent Patrick Callahan and Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp shared that the collision had occurred at around 10:20 a.m. on Thursday.

It happened along Route 80 near Mount Olive Township, New Jersey State. Sources told NBC 4 New York that at least two passengers were dead.

ABC News also had two law enforcement officials who confirmed the deaths. A press conference was held on Thursday afternoon by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

He also confirmed the two fatalities and stated that they included a teacher and a student. Murphy added that some of the victims of the crash were listed in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

“There’s an incredible emergency response from throughout Morris County and by State Police. It’s a horrific scene.”

The driver of the dump truck was alive and in a hospital. Murphy informed the public that schools in the area would be opened on Friday and crisis counselors were on hand to talk to students.

Images from the scene that were posted on social media showed how severe the accident was. The school bus was pictured lying on its side with its front end and undercarriage torn to pieces and scattered along the highway.

The public information officer Anna Scalora from the Atlantic Health System told NorthJersey.com that Morristown Medical Center had accepted victims. She shared that they couldn’t comment on their conditions as it was an active investigation.

ABC News reported that Paramus Police Chief Ken Ehrenberg had confirmed that the bus was from East Brook Middle School.

Murphy confirmed on Twitter that he was on the scene at the middle school on Thursday afternoon. He shared via his post that everybody's hearts were broken by the day’s tragedy.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash were currently ongoing.
